Pangaea was a supercontinent that existed between 300 and 200 million years ago during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras. It was C-shaped, with most of its landmass between the Earth's polar regions. The eastern edge of Pangaea had an embayment called the Tethys Sea.
From about 300-200 million years ago (late Paleozoic Era until the very late Triassic), the continent we now know as North America was contiguous with Africa, South America, and Europe. They all existed as a single continent called Pangea.
Pangea, supercontinent that incorporated almost all of Earth's landmasses in early geologic time.
About 240 million years ago, all the continents were joined together in a single landmass called Pangaea, which means "All Lands".
The breakup of Pangaea
Around 200 million years ago, Pangaea began to break apart due to plate tectonics:
Magma rose up through a weakness in the crust, creating a volcanic rift zone.
Volcanic eruptions spread ash and debris across the landscape.
The continents of Europe and North America separated first, followed by South America and Africa.
The continents continue to move
The continents are still moving apart today, at a rate of several centimeters per year.
Evidence of the breakup
The continents fit together like puzzle pieces, with the east coast of South America matching up with the west coast of Africa. The structure of the ocean floor also provides clues to the continents' movement.
The process of supercontinents
The process of supercontinents breaking apart and re-forming has been happening for billions of years. We are currently in the middle of one of these cycles.
