In “Why the Sea is Salt” a magical millstone is used to create food out of thin air. Soon this inspires greed in people and things turn sour, or rather, salty.
Even today it is said that, “there lies the mill at the bottom of the sea, and still, day by day, it grinds on; and that is why the sea is salt.”
"Why the Sea is Salt" is a Norwegian fairy tale that was collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe and included in Andrew Lang's The Blue Fairy Book (1889).
In all versions of the story, the new owner of the hand-mill takes it to sea and sets it to grind out salt. The mill grinds out salt until it sinks the boat, and then continues grinding in the sea, turning the sea salty.
Andrew Lang (1844-1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, and anthropologist. He is best known for his collection of fairy tales and folk tales.
